The origin of Maotai
The origins of Maotai liquor can be traced back to the Western Han Dynasty. According to the Zunyi Prefecture Chronicles, Goujiang liquor was the prototype of Maotai liquor. In the sixth year of Emperor Wu's reign (135 BC), Tang Meng was dispatched to the Nanyue Kingdom (the area where Maotai Town's current Renhuai County is located). There, he tasted the locally produced Goujiang liquor and brought it back to Chang'an to present to Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty. After tasting it, Emperor Wu greatly admired it, describing it as incredibly sweet and delicious, thus leaving behind the legend of Tang Meng's drinking Goujiang liquor and enchanting the kingdom of Yelang. Since then, Goujiang liquor became renowned as a tribute to the imperial court.

During the development of Maotai liquor, there were several crucial milestones and events:
* In the late Qing Dynasty, around 1862, a businessman named Wang Mao in Maotai Town acquired a local distillery and began producing a type of liquor primarily made from sorghum. This liquor, through special brewing techniques and lengthy aging, developed a unique taste and a full-bodied character, gradually distinguishing itself in the market.
* In 1704, the "Jiesheng Distillery" officially named its produced liquor as Maotai.
* In 1879, Shi Rongxiao, a prominent landlord in Renhuai County, Sun Quantai, and Wang Lifu, the owner of the "Wangtianhe" salt shop, jointly established the "Rongtaihe Distillery," later renamed Ronghe Distillery.
* In 1951, the government consolidated the three private liquor workshops of Chengyi (Hua Mao), Ronghe (Wang Mao), and Hengxing (Lai Mao) through redemption, confiscation, and takeover, implementing the policy of combining the three Maos into one – the establishment of the state-owned Maotai Liquor Factory.

Maotai liquor is renowned for its unique geographical environment, air, soil, water, and climatic conditions that foster a distinct microbial community, which cannot be replicated in other environments. These unique conditions in the Maotai River valley, combined with traditional brewing techniques, have made Maotai liquor a renowned liquor brand in China and worldwide.
